##### PROBLEM FOCUS

The production of biofuels such as renewable ethanol can be energy- and emissions-intense, between process energy needs and energy lost to distillation cooling towers.

##### TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION

Energy Integration Inc. has developed a mechanical vapor compression/heat pump system to capture waste heat and reduce hydrocarbon input 50–75% for common distillation processes (e.g., biorefineries), with a simple payback as short as one year for retrofits.
