Solar energy provides too little of the world's electricity. Lower costs and increased efficiency could enable wider adoption, however, solar panel efficiency has plateaued in recent years and is only expected to increase modestly over the next decade using traditional innovation approaches.

Heliotrope Photonics is a solar technology startup increasing the efficiency of solar panels. Heliotrope's breakthrough solution is a thin film of perovskite deposited on solar glass that converts UV light, unusable by a solar cell to produce energy, into usable infrared light. This innovation has the potential to increase the power output of a solar panel by 8-15%, equivalent to a decade of industry progress.
